Sizing FAQs

What if I'm between sizes?

If you're in between sizes, take into consideration your body type and what you are generally most comfortable in. Do you find that you often size up in shoes or pants? Do you have wide feet or narrow? Do you like a really tight fit for the feeling of support?

Don't forget we do offer postage-paid free returns & exchanges - so if the first size you try isn't a perfect fit, we'll happily help you find one that does.

How do I know if I need a "wide calf" size?

Our wide calf sizes accommodate a calf circumference of 17-21," measured at the widest point of the calf. To measure your calves, use a tape measure or a piece of string that you can lay alongside a ruler.

If your calf measures between a wide calf and standard calf size, we recommend trying the standard calf size first. Compression socks should feel tight, like a gentle hug for your legs.

Why do some of my socks feel tighter than others?

You may find that a pair of your compression socks feels tighter than the others, even in the same size. This is normal! Different fabrics will feel differently on your legs. For example, nylon socks may feel more compressive due to the denser weave (400 needle-count) - however, they offer the same compression that you'd get from the same compression level in a cotton sock. Customers often remark that our cotton socks feel the most stretchy & easy to put on.

Our products are regularly tested and quality-checked to ensure they fall within the listed compression range and correct size measurements - so you can be assured that the socks you're wearing are delivering all the benefits of graduated compression.

It's important to note that some of our more complex designs do have stitching on the inside that some say makes the sock feel tighter or harder to put on. This is the nature of a sock that has the design woven into the fabric, rather than printed on the surface. If you are concerned about fit, we do recommend starting with our simpler designs to begin getting your legs used to the feeling of wearing compression socks.

Compression Levels

Compression garments are made in a variety of support levels, each designed to address different needs. These levels are most commonly expressed in millimeters of mercury (abbreviated as mmHg). Generally, graduated compression is displayed in ranges. The higher the numerical value, the stronger the support level indicated. For example, a 20-30 mmHg garment will offer more support and feel tighter than a 15-20 mmHg garment.

All VIM & VIGR legwear is offered in a 15-20 mmHg compression level and select styles are available in 20-30 mmHg and 30-40 mmHg.

15-20 mmHg

Ideal for all-day, every day wear. Offers moderate support to reduce ankle and leg swelling, ease tired and achy legs, and aid in muscle recovery.

Commonly used for travel, mild to moderate edema, pregnancy, spider and varicose veins.

20-30 mmHg

Moderate to Firm

20-30 mmHg is a medical grade compression level and often comes as a prescription or recommendation by a healthcare provider. Please consult with your healthcare provider before choosing this level of support.

Commonly used for moderate edema, lymphedema, Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), pre and post-surgical applications, moderate spider and varicose veins.

30-40 mmHg

30-40 mmHg is a prescription compression level and is often prescribed by a doctor for treating health conditions such as venous insufficiency, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and lymphedema.

Please consult with your healthcare provider before choosing this level of support.

    Excellent Socks

My wife loves these socks. Fit is prefect. Good thickness.

Favourite sock I've tried by a long shot! Dysautonomia approved, minimal sweating and max comfort.

Short answer: AMAZING, worth the cost/special laundering requirements, and far better than any cheap pure synthetic alternative. They are the closest thing to a "normal," non-compression sock experience that I have found yet. (See: comfortable, and unobtrusive!)

Long answer: Was nervous about the premium price (+ shipping to CA) but they are 100% worth it. They fit well around the upper foot, like a normal sock!! (Unlike many other compression socks I have tried, which are either toeless or have a weird loose bag of fabric around the toe area). The toe seam is minimal and does not bother me. With my other nylon compression socks, they are too thin to wear alone with my work boots (I work retail shifts on my feet) and tend to chafe/stretch out quickly with use. I usually have to wear an extra pair of regular socks over top the compression socks as padding. This is a very warm and oftentimes sweaty solution. I DO NOT have to do that with these socks! The material is thicker than normal nylon compression socks and the construction feels considerably sturdier. I can wear them without that extra sock layer for work shifts and they work great. They feel very supportive, *and* the top of the sock doesn't dig into my calves or itch after a long day like other socks do. I will sometimes wear compression socks to bed to help with dysautonomic symptoms, and they are WAY more comfortable to wear to bed than any other synthetic sock I've tried. I feel the merino socks can get warm under the covers, so they are a good winter pick but if you run hot/can't give up sleeping with blankets (ahem...), I suspect the cotton socks would be more apropos. The look of the sock is also a plus, of course. They look entirely normal, perhaps even.. fashionable?? This is unprecedented for 20-30mmhg socks (which most often come in boring black, glaring neon colours, or odd mismatched striped patterns). My only wish is that I had bought more than two pairs! They are definitely an expensive investment, but I have a feeling that these will last for a good while if rotated out and washed correctly.

I don't have the ability to measure the actual compression of these socks against the claim of 20-30mmhg, but based on my experience with other socks, this is probably accurate. I find that these also stretch out less (especially the foot area!) with repeated wear than other socks, but being that they're thicker and partly composed of wool, they do need to be washed more often and with more care in order to maintain good compression and hygiene. I don't find this to be too much of a hassle. I will usually rinse them by hand in cold water (no detergent) before sending them through a DELICATE wash cycle on the coldest settings with a small amount of a dedicated wool detergent. I will machine dry part-way on the gentlest setting before laying flat overnight. As to be expected, they do have that distinct merino wool smell when still damp after laundering, but I haven't noticed it when dry or in daily use. (Actually, my feet smell less at the end of the day when wearing merino wool than other fibres!)

I wish that VIM&VIGR offered thigh and waist high options, as those markets are badly lacking in comfy breathable options! However, these get the job done for my needs (mild-moderate dysautonomic symptoms, suspected POTS but not diagnosed) and are absolutely my first pick. If I had infinite money, I would own, like, 28 pairs of these socks and wear them around the clock.

    Cotton Compression socks

These cotton compression socks are the most comfortable I've ever tried plus the only ones I've tried that fit toes well! The toe box on others I've tried are too big, not firm fitting and uncomfortable . I will only be buying these from now on

    Montana Plaid 20-30

These are great sock. I bought them to help with cancer treatment related edema. They are comfortable, and warm. Most importantly they lessen my edema. Thanks for offering such a quality product.

Love my new socks. I was so tired of black. These, at last, make a fasion statement.
Easy to put on and feel great. Customes service dept. is great as well.
    Thanks again

Look and feel great+fit short people

I'm 5'1" and made the mistake of starting with unisex sox. So hard to deal with all that extra fabric. These socks fit great, and they're easier to pull up because there's not so much material. The compression is excellent because they're sized right. The best part, though, is their excellent pattern and color. I'm delighted to have them in my rotation.
