So far, we’ve talked about the benefits of wearing our VIM & VIGR compression socks and what the risk factors are for developing varicose veins. But fear not loyal VIM & VIGR readers, because all hope is not lost! According to Dr. Bunke of the La Jolla Vein Clinic, there are many steps we can take to reduce our risk for developing varicose veins. With these 4 simple tips, you can ward off varicose veins and promote better circulation in no time!

  1. Take time to stretch. If you find yourself sitting or standing for long periods of time, take frequent breaks to stretch. Stretching circulates stagnant blood and also prevents venous injury. For those of you who love yoga, keep it up! According to a new study, published in The Chronicle Journal, yoga has been found to decrease blood pressure, blood vessel calcifications, and promote circulation. Yoga not your thing? Try doing calf muscle pumps next time you’re at work! Simply stand on a flat surface and extend your calves until you are on the balls of your feet, then slowly lower yourself. A few sets of these will help get stagnant blood flowing.
  2. Adopt a healthy diet. Obesity is one of the largest contributors to the development of varicose veins, so maintaining a healthy weight greatly reduces your overall risk. In addition to a healthy diet, certain foods such as citrus fruits and those that contain omega 3 fatty acids are known to improve circulation. Spicy foods also improve circulation, so be generous with that hot sauce next time you’re out!
  3. Exercise regularly. A regular exercise routine helps promote blood flow and reenergizes the body. In fact, research has shown that exercise can be just as effective as pills when it comes to treating heart disease. Any activity that engages the calf muscles is great for improving leg circulation. Walking, running, biking, and surfing are all great examples. Even doing simple things like taking the stairs or parking a little farther away from the store can make a difference!

Size Chart:

We have a different sizing chart depending on the type of compression garment. Please consider your foot and calf circumference when choosing your size.

If you're in between sizes, ask yourself a few questions:
What is my body type? Will I be more comfortable in a size up or down? Take your body type into consideration when choosing a size especially if you're in between sizes.

Garment Care:

Compression Levels:

Compression garments are made in a variety of support levels, each of which is designed to address different needs. These levels are most commonly expressed in millimeters of mercury (abbreviated as mmHg). Generally, graduated compression is displayed in ranges. The higher the numerical value, the stronger the support level indicated. For example, a 20-30 mmHg garment will offer more support and feel tighter than a 15-20 mmHg garment.

All of VIM & VIGR’s products are offered in 15-20 mmHg compression level and select styles are available in 20-30 mmHg.

How to put on compression socks:

Slip your arm into the sock until your fingers reach the toes. Your palm should be resting in the sock's heel. 

Starting at the cuff, fold the sock over until it meets the heel. Make sure to fold the sock onto itself.

With the sock still inverted, pull the foot of the sock firmly onto your foot. Make sure your toes are securely in the toe pocket. Starting with the cuff, gradually roll the sock up.

Adjust so that your heel is properly positioned in the heel pocket and the cuff sits below the knee. Make sure the cuff is not pulled up too high.
